 The weekends are usually the toughest time to stay strict paleo. How is everyone doing? Post thoughts and experiences to comments.
We saw a lot of great things in food journals today. Some quick tips from the overview…

Make sure you are eating enough. You should never really have to feel hungry. Not to say that you won’t feel cravings but that’s what makes the challenge challenging. If you let yourself get hungry you are more likely to go for the stuff that will cost you points.

Greg W. had a great little comment on water yesterday and he’s right on. Staying hydrated will help you fell less frequent hunger and will have a positive effect on your body’s ability to burn fat.

Finally sleep. Your body does most of it’s best work when you are sleeping. Many of you have expressed that you are sleeping way better this week since starting paleo than you have in a long time-go with it! A pitch black (not even alarm clock light)  quiet room and 8-9 solid hours will accomplish great things for your performance body composition and mental well being.

    The weekend is definitely tougher. But went to a friends house tonight and brought paleo friendly food. A particular life saver was paleo custard. Not just paleo-good, really yummy. I tried adding cocoa, but it just wasn’t quite right, but the plain were delicious. they might be even better with some berries. Here’s the recipe:
    5 eggs
    2 teaspoon vanilla extract
    2 cups Original flavored coconut milk
    12 teaspoons (1/4 cup) honey
    ground cinnamon or nutmeg
    six petit creuset pots or other small stoneware dishes
    Preheat oven to 325 degrees Fahrenheit.

    In a saucepan, combine the milk and honey. In another saucepan, heat 1-2 cups of water. Bring both pans to a simmer. Remove the milk and honey from heat. Lower the heat on the water and keep it warm.

    In a medium bowl, whisk together the eggs and vanilla until yolks are very smooth, about 3 minutes. Add the warm milk and honey to the eggs, whisk together until well combined.

    Using a sieve, pour egg mixture so it evenly settles in each dessert cup. Make sure to use oven safe dishes.

    Place dessert cups in a baking dish big enough so the dessert cups don’t touch one another. Pour hot water from the warm saucepan into the baking dish so that it comes up to the level of the custard on the outside of each individual dish. This water is to prevent the custard from burning. This step is very important.

    Slide the pan into the oven and bake until custards are set around the edges, about 40 minutes. Allow custards to further set by refrigerating for at least 2 hours. Or serve them right away, warm. Or can freeze after setting.

  2. Weekends ARE TOUGH!! Friday night we go to my family’s and they order OLIVE GARDEN to go! Who does that?? oh yeah, I would’ve…. last week….. not now! I packed my meal for Friday and Saturday night when my family ordered CHINESE? Tricky…but I did it!

    Had my own personal paleo chef come over (Katherine) and taught me how to make a few things. I can say that her paleo marinara sauce (already posted) is THE BOMB! Also, tried the paleo pancakes (also already posted) the other am with 1/2 mashed banana on top, obviously not IHOP:(but pretty good:) Maybe someday I will post my own recipie, until then thank you to all who do!ovend

  4. Looks great Katie!…Erin, you really need to not see your family for a couple weeks:)… Amanda, considering IHOP is disgusting, Im assuming that the pancakes were quite delicious.

    We are in N.H. at Marks dads. Its funny that when we tell people we are eating healthy and doing a challenge they ask if they should buy us soy milk… Last night went well. They bought about $50 worth of nuts and seeds but unfortunatly for Mark soynuts were mixed in. Thats not a fun way to lose a point. Besides that it went well. Had yummy steaks and stirfry, skipped desert and went to bed early. Now its time to raid the cabinets to try to find coconut milk. Shoulda brought some! See you all tomorrow!

  5. wow sat. night was bad for me. didnt mess up, but was one miserable freak. could see headlines “man turns into caveman, after eating like one”.it was the first time we didn’t eat enough at dinner, then went out and stared at 15 people eat pasta and drinks. big lesson learned for me not to get to that point of hunger. i actually thought about bushy’s idea of the two shots before and after midnight, then got so desperate that i started thinking about how water doesn’t freeze or thaw at the exact point of 32 degrees, so perhaps at the stroke of midnight i would be in neither day, so all the shots consumed would be in their own dimension, but how could i get them down in that fraction of a moment…..so i went to bed.

  6. Jon. Saturday was hard for us. We were craving food that we don’t even like… I don’t know if we let ourselves get too hungry or if day 4 is just a difficult day. Today seems to be better. Anyone else have a hard time yesterday?

  7. Day 3 was hard for me. I was starving all day, I ate A LOT. But I listened to myself and ate good paleo food, regardless of quantity…I was down on the scale the next day. The metabolism is starting to crank methinks.

    Here is a tip a read from CrossFit New England that might help with your decision on the sweet potato, hope this helps…

    Post Work Out: Post workout is the one time we will allow a slight deviation from Paleo. If you are unable to stomach solid foods after training a protein drink is a great alternative. For fast and complete recovery we suggest a post workout protein shake and some sweet potatoes. You should mix the protein with water (aim for 20-30 grams), and eat 3-9 ounces of sweet potatoes. If your primary goal is to decrease body fat and get leaner skip the potatoes. If you just finished Murph, Eva, Badger or other 30+ minute intense workout, go higher on the starches to replace glycogen. Your performance the next day is dependent on it.

    Tim and I eat them occasionally, they are super yummy in any form, but we like to slice and roast them with olive oil and sprinkles of cinnamon.

  9. If you feel REALLY hungry try cutting an apple up into small pieces; it will take you longer to eat and will make you feel full.

    Also, here are some ways to STOP cravings:
    1.Brush your teeth
    2.Take a shower
    3.Take a nap
    5.Drink water
    6.Have a cup of tea or coffee

    *Remember the first 21 days are the hardest!

  10. Just had portabello mushroom sauce over steak, served with roasted brussel sprouts and mashed butternut squash.

    Portabello mushroom sauce

    1 port. mushroom
    1 cup chicken stock
    garlic powder
    olive oil

    Cut mushroom into bite-size pieces, then sautee in olive oil. Add salt and pepper. Add chicken stock and garlic powder. Bring to roiling boil, and allow to reduce until it reaches desired constitency-I let it reduce until almost no liuqid, the bites of mushroom taste awesome!

I have been really fiending for some ketchup, with my steak and with my eggs…yes i have a refined palete…so i found this recipe for paleo ketchup and am going to get the ingredients tomorrow.I’m gonna get an old fashioned red top squirt bottle to put it in to try and fool myself. I will post how it tastes;

    Paleo Ketchup
    1 small can (384 mL/12 oz) of plain, sugar-free tomato sauce
    1 small can (6 oz) tomato paste
    2 tsp vinegar (I used apple cider)
    3/4 tsp garlic powder
    1/2 tsp onion powder
    a pinch of ground cloves
    1/4 tsp allspice

    Combine all ingredients in a small sauce pan and simmer for 10-15 minutes. Let cool and transfer to container and then into fridge.

  13. Drew I am so glad you posted that I am the same way when it comes to ketchup, nothing against mustard of course…I tried some of crossfit mamas paleo mayo-AWESOME-on everything. I am going to fill capri sun packets with the stuff.

  14. So hard that this challenge started the day before my birthday! I love cake! Needless to say im down some points for excessive celebrating! The party is finally over and its game on!
    I always crave sweets after dinner.. im so happy to see the paleo custard recipe…..
    Much easier doing this with a site to come to with such helpful info.
