Paleo Check Point. We are at 2 weeks!
How is it going? Are you on track or ready to spiral out of control? Can you last the 90 days? What are you feeling and do you feel like it’s starting to work or like you are going backward?

The paleo kits have shipped and will be in this week. We dropped off the long sleeve shirts and hooded zip up sweat shirts at the printer today and hopefully they will be in by the 23rd.

    Here is a beef jerky recipe I use modified from the Nesco dehydrator recipe:

    1lb lean meat which I slice a bit frozen for easier slicing.

    4 T Coconut Aminos (Coconut Secret) it is a soy sauce substitute. I buy at Whole Foods or health food store. I also use in stir frys.

    1 T tomato sauce
    1 T grated ginger root (optional)
    1/4 black pepper or cayenne for hotter jerky
    1 T curry powder (optional)
    2 gloves garlic chopped

    Marinate for 4 to 6 hours. I cook in my dehydrator for 3 hours at 165 degrees. You can purchase one with coupon for under $50 at Bed Bath and Beyond.

  2. Funny you should ask….. for the paat 3 days I have been in a mental battle with myself over this paleo lifestyle…is it for me? Are there any real benefits? I am struggling with this mostly because I find I have significantly less energy especially during workouts, I know the Filthy 50 is tough but if I didn’t have Traci in my face (thanks Traci) I’m not sure I would have finished….. I was done, mentally and physically… which is new for me I’m generally mentally tough. I signed up for it so Im sticking with it…. I love crossfit and everyone is super supportive….. I’ve just got to figure out how to feel better eating paleo…..

    I made Nicole’s/Tims carrot muffins and they are the best thing I have ever tasted!! and super easy!! It’s going to be hard not to eat all of them today. So good even my husband and baby liked them. Has anyone found kelp noodles? Are they good?

    Better start this am- already cooked most of 2 paleo dinners! Used Healthy Solutions Spice Blends on some chicken. I found this at the fish counter of Mashpee Stop & Shop. Just brush with oil and sprinkle blend on and bake. Easy for the time challenged!

  5. Sarah, you can find palm shortening (brand name Spectrum) at the Shaw’s in Hyannis. It also might be at Cape Cod Natural Foods in Centerville. I don’t think Trader Joe’s carries it.

  6. I feel like Paleo is definitely working. The first week was yucky – feeling like crap and figuring out the whole shopping/cooking/finding time to do it all thing. But, then everything started to fall into place – weight came off, pullups got a little easier, I started craving squash instead of Snickers (never thought I’d see that happen!!!) and I just felt good 🙂 I spent a lot of Sunday in the kitchen and it makes a huge difference having all that yumminess in the fridge for the week – just grab and go. For me, so far so good. I am definitely in this for the full 90 days and beyond.

  7. One more thing and then I’ll shut up – you can also get Spectrum Palm Shortening online. Amazon has it for $21.60 for a case of 4 tubs. Spend $25 and you get free shipping. I think at Shaw’s, it’s around $7 for one container.

    Katherine, I am so glad you had cookie success. Today’s recipe is the next in line up from my Turkey dinner.

    Wicked good Paleo stuffing

    1 large onion, chopped
    4 stalks celery, chopped
    5 sage leaves, chopped
    1 recipe squash bread
    (see older posts)
    1 small package Italian sausage
    (You will need to search to make sure you are getting one without corn syrup solids)
    1 granny smith apple, chopped
    1/3 cup golden raisins
    1/3 cup chopped pecans
    chicken broth

    Brown sausage in a pan breaking it up with a wooden spoon. Once cooked remove sausage and to that same pan add onions and celery. Season with salt and pepper. Cook for about 10 min and add your apples and raisins. Cook for a few minutes and put contents of pan and sausage into a large bowl. Crumble the squash bread over the top. Add pecans. Deglaze the hot pan with 1 and 1/2 cups chicken broth to bring up all the bits of flavor. Pour this over stuffing mix. Mix everything and put into a 9×13 pan.
    Bake at 350 degrees for about 30 minutes or until the top gets nice and brown. Serve with paleo gravy. Recipe tomorrow!

Mark and Sarah, I was just writing down some recipes from the paleo diet lifestyle and while I think I have it down on the whats and whatnots, they give some recipes that have butter or Ghee, and they go on to say why butter is controversial but why it is paleo? confusing because they had this wonderful lemon, scallop (butter) dish. clarify?

  10. I feel fine. Don’t know about weight loss though – home scale says maybe just a little. hardest part of challenge in general i think is going to be time of year for me. had a party saturday night and ate and drank enough for a zero point day, and i’m pretty sure that at least 2 more times this winter i’ll be in similar situations. as far as being tired – nope. sluggish – nope. hungry – nope.

  11. Cape Cod Val- Unfortunately, the internet contradicts itself as we all well know. Glee is made from butter, so for this challenge it is on the no list. However, after your 90 days you might want to experiment with it and see how you feel. If you look, feel and preform well… then you might be fine with it. I believe when you boil the butter down and are left with the ghee you have removed the dairy and caisin (that is what gives us tummy issues) but it is not a guarantee. Hey, if we have given up sugar, cream, BACON, and all of our other favorite foods… then we can all live without a little ghee for this challenge!

    Bushy- the scale might not be moving yet, but you look thinner and healthier already.

  12. @Sarah, I can certainly live without it yes. Even in the Primal Blueprint, everytime I would see a fabulous recipe, it would have butter or half and half, go figure. I am staying right on track. I can’t wait to see how I will feel once I get over this cold or whatever it is.

  13. Things are going well for me. I weighed myself for the first time in two weeks and I am down 4 pounds. I thought that my pants were fitting a little differently:) I’m feeling pretty good overall and have found it pretty easy to avoid prior temptations. I can definitely last the full 90 days!

    My plan for holiday gatherings is to shoot for sticking with strict Paleo, but if I feel the need to deviate slightly I will. I just don’t want to go into it saying that I’m going to just pig out. Tim asked if I wanted help staying on track or to just be left alone, and I thought about it for a moment and decided that I need to make the decision on what to eat or what not to eat on my own. I’m confident that I can make some choices that I’ll feel good about.


    1 pound hamburger
    1 pound turkey burger
    3 eggs
    1 sauteed onion
    1/2 cup almond flour
    Montreal seasoning, Dried thyme or herbs to taste (at a minimum salt and pepper)

    Combine all ingredients well and form into meatballs.

    Add several tablespoons of olive oil to a medium/high preheated frying pan. Add meatballs and fry until cooked through. Or flatten the meatballs into burgers and cook until crispy.

  15. Nutty Cookies

    2 bananas smashed
    1/3 cup coconut flour
    3/4 cup almond butter
    1/2 tsp baking soda
    1/3 cup raw walnuts
    1 apple finely chopped
    1/3 cup coconut milk
    1 tbsp cinnamon

    Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
    In a medium mixing bowl, use a fork to smash the bananas to baby food consistency.
    Add the coconut flour, almond butter, and baking soda and mix well. Using a hand held chopper or food processor, chop the walnuts and apples to a very fine dice.
    Add the walnuts, apples, coconut milk, and cinnamon to the bowl and mix in remaining ingredients. Cover two cookie sheets with parchment paper and spoon heaping tablespoons of the cookie mix onto the parchment paper, placing an inch or two apart. Back for 25 minutes.
    Makes approximately 20-22 cookies.
