Q: How long have you been doing Crossfit?
Sam: I was eight years old when Crossfit came into my life. I was always around it, and I would do a teens class every now and then when they offered them, but I wasn’t consistent. I have been doing Crossfit for exactly one year regularly, and I don’t expect that to change.
Q: What peaked your interest in this gym?
Sam: My parents were on a trip and I was sitting on the couch watching The Office. My Uncle Bob Sorbello walked into the door and told me I was going to Crossfit with him. I really didn’t want to, but I went anyway. No regrets.
Q: Do you remember your first workout?
Sam: I don’t know the exact workout, but I know it left me wanting more.
Q: Do you have a favorite WOD and why?
Sam: Probably “The Don” or Maggie. I did “Maggie” a while back, and that was the first mental battle workout where the whole time I wanted to give up. Something came over me and I just wanted to cry and go to sleep. When I finished it, I was soooo happy. “The Don” was pretty rough too, obviously. It’s not that those workouts were fun, but they rewarded me so much afterward, and that felt awesome.
Q: How did it feel to get your first muscle up?
Sam: Getting my first muscle up is indescribable. After a month of constantly working on drills that Jamin gave me and tips from Allan, I was finally able to get it! I got my first muscle up and I was shocked. I got a bunch of hugs from coaches and it really showed the community aspect of this gym and Crossfit as a whole to me. We have each other’s backs. Period.
Q: What are three words you would use to describe Crossfit?
Sam: Painful. Fun. Rewarding.
